The Fano dei Cesari has already begun and will continue through July 12, 2026. Whether you’re already in Fano or are arriving in the coming days, this guide will help you make sure you don’t miss a thing at this grand Roman historical reenactment: the program, schedule, where to watch the chariot race, and how to best plan your visit during the July heat.
Loft Verdemare, located 6 km from downtown, still has a few rooms available for the remaining days of the event.
How the Fano dei Cesari Works
The event takes place entirely in the historic center of Fano, centered around the Arch of Augustus, Piazza XX Settembre, and the main streets of the city center. For nine days, dozens of participants in Roman costume fill the streets—centurions, vestal virgins, senators, gladiators, merchants—recreating the atmosphere of the ancient Roman colony of Fanum Fortunae.
The event schedule
The main events take place in the late afternoon and evening, when the July heat begins to subside. Roman markets are usually open in the afternoon as well, while parades, gladiator shows, and spectacular performances take place after sunset, when the warm lighting brings out the historic atmosphere to the fullest.
What Not to Miss
The Chariot Race
The most anticipated event, usually held during the middle weekend of the festival. The chariots race along a route through the historic center amid the cheers of the crowd—be sure to arrive early to get a good spot along the route.
Gladiatorial Combats
Specialized historical reenactment groups stage choreographed duels with great attention to historical detail. An engaging show for all ages, usually held in a town square or a central location along the route.
Costume parades
Parades featuring people in Roman costumes wind their way through the main streets at various times of the day. It’s a remarkable sight, especially at sunset.
The Markets of Rome
Themed stalls featuring handmade goods, period food, and historical artifacts. A way to experience the atmosphere in a more direct and interactive way, by buying or tasting something.
How to Get Around During the Event
During the Fano dei Cesari festival, the historic center is often partially or completely closed to traffic to accommodate parades and performances. Parking in the downtown area is therefore limited. Staying at Loft Verdemare, which includes private parking, allows you to leave your car safely and reach the center on foot or with a short drive, without having to worry about finding a parking spot.
How to Cope with the July Heat
July in Fano can be hot, especially during the middle of the day. That’s why it’s best to spend your mornings at the beach—the beaches are 8–10 minutes from the loft—and devote the late afternoon and evening to the event, when temperatures drop and the historic atmosphere is at its most charming.
The Loft's Garden as a Retreat
Between one day of events and the next, the private garden at Loft Verdemare, with its shaded patio, is the perfect place to cool off and relax before the next evening.
Where to Eat During the Event
During the Fano dei Cesari festival, many restaurants in the city center offer themed menus or simply their usual excellent Fano-style seafood cuisine. It’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance, especially on evenings when multiple events are scheduled.
