From July 4 to 12, 2026, Fano will travel back two thousand years in time. “La Fano dei Cesari” is a grand Roman historical reenactment that transforms the city’s historic center into a living ancient Roman colony: costumed processions, Roman markets, gladiators, legionary encampments, and the spectacular chariot race. It is one of the most spectacular and well-attended historical events in the Marche region.
To make the most of it, the Loft Verdemare, located 6 km from the center of Fano, is the perfect base—especially during nine days of nonstop events.
What Is Fano dei Cesari?
Fano was founded by the Romans as Colonia Julia Fanestris, on the Via Flaminia. “La Fano dei Cesari” celebrates this heritage with a historical reenactment of the highest caliber, with meticulous attention to detail: authentic costumes, markets featuring period goods, gladiator shows, reconstructed legionary encampments, and the famous chariot race through the historic center.
An event that involves the entire city
For nine days, the historic center of Fano is completely transformed. The streets fill with people dressed in Roman costumes, the squares host themed markets, and every evening there are shows, parades, and entertainment for all ages.

The Historical Parades
Parades featuring people in Roman costumes wind through the streets of the historic center, with centurions, senators, Vestal Virgins, and Roman citizens reenacting scenes from daily life in ancient Rome. It’s a spectacular sight, especially at sunset when the warm evening light blends with the colors of the costumes.
The Markets of Rome
The squares in the historic center host themed markets featuring artisanal products, period food, artifacts, and historical reenactments. It’s an immersive way to experience the atmosphere of ancient Rome—not just by looking, but also by touching, tasting, and participating.
Gladiator Shows
The reenactments of gladiatorial combat are one of the most anticipated highlights of the event. Specialized historical reenactment groups recreate the duels with choreography that is both meticulously staged and historically accurate—a spectacle that captivates young and old alike.
The Chariot Race
The highlight of the Fano dei Cesari festival is the chariot race, which generally takes place during the middle weekend of the event. The horse-drawn chariots race along a course through the historic center, amid the cheers of the crowd—an experience that recreates the energy of ancient Roman races.
